From the postmodernism seminar

Notes from the postmodernism seminar, after we went to see the exhibition in V&A.
Differences between modernism and postmodernism (with The Gehry House as example)

* There's nothing rational about it (modernism=rationalism)
* It looks like it used to be a modernist house -> playing with expectations
* It hasn't got a function at all (modernism=all about function)
* Schizofrenic building
* Eclectic
* Looks like it's 4 different buildings, with a 'normal' house in the back
* For some reason I had to think of greenhouses we have in Belgium

Pollock's Toy Museum

Despite the big pile of school work that needs to be done before assessment week, I went to Pollock's Toy Museum, as this is one of the many things on my list I still needed to go to before I leave (argh!). It's so much different than the Childhood museum in Bethnal Green; smaller but cosier en less touristy and busy. The place is a real gem, both inside and out. Even the toilets are painted in style with the rest. Apart from these drawings I made photos as well (including the toilet), but for some peculiar reason I managed to get rid of them. Such a shame!

wednesday talk: Simone Lia 25/01

* (and again) Collectives/studios are important. Different people together doing different things
* Get a bit of a relationship going (with bookstores etc)
* Get things out there so people can discover it by themselves
* It's not that difficult to make your wacky ideas happen
* Think of yourself as a business if you want to make an income
* Sometime you don't get paid, even for big things as the Guardian - but it's a massive advert and you can do what you want
* Make a living with illustration: it's a gift and it's a gift to be shared
* Be friendly, talk to a lot of people (random guy on train = art director at Tate)

In Jack the Ripper's footsteps

A while ago we did a Jack the Ripper tour, not in an actual money costing ghost tour group, but self organised with freshly printed directions and 'fun' facts. It PROBABLY would've been scarier if there was an experienced guide telling us everything but this was fun too. We've been to 4 different places of murder, one more frightning than the other. In general there wasn't a big Jack the Ripper vibe in most places since everything got renewed over the years, obviously. But just the thought that this insane psychopath killed woman in the most horrible ways possible, walked down the same ground I was walking on, was pretty scary. And Whitechapel has got its weird and dodgy places.
Especially the second murder location (where he killed Annie Chapman) was clearly the most famous as there was a photoshoot going on (sort of a skanky and low budget one with a cheap looking woman in furs), and some interview was taking place as well (see below).
There was this one street where all of the houses remained the same as in Jack the Ripper period, I believe it was the street one of the victims lived in (not sure though). We did see a 'professional' Jack the Ripper tour in that street, mainly containing seniors (see below).
